Hassle Free Barbell sent an unprecedented 21 athletes to this year's USWA Junior National Championships in Foster City, CA on March 20-22. While lifting against the best Junior (under 20) lifters in the country, HF had 8 athletes place in the top 3. 20 out of 21 lifters totaled and the men's team walked away with the team title for the second year in a row and the women took second place missing the championship by only 3 points.
If you’re going to San Francisco, or want a good excuse to do so, the California Weightlifting Fund and FIT Barbell Club are hosting the 2009 USA Weightlifting Junior National Championships and the Pan Am Secondary Qualifier this weekend.
St. Hope Crossfit's Hassle Free BBC is sending 11 athletes to this years US Weightlifting Junior Nationals:Sae Vang - 56kg, Harold Davis - 56kg, Trevon Jonshon - 62kg, Byron Gibson - 77kg, Keylin Mackey - 85kg, Clinton Johnson - 85kg, Donovan Ford - 105kg, Brandell Sampson - 105kg, Alex Lee - 105+kg, Lanisha Redd - 75kg, Sydney Munsey - 75+kg.
Sae Vang representing Hassle Free BBC, based at Sacramento High School, was last years School Age National Champion and will be working to add the 2009 Junior National Championship to his growing list of accomplishments.
Brandell Sampson, also representing Hassle Free BBC, will be looking to add the Junior National Championship to last years School Age Championship.
Donovan Ford took home 5th place as an 18-year old at last years Juniors in the very competitive 94kg weight class. He is looking for gold this year and is currently the #1 ranked Junior going into this week's event.
As part of our off-season conditioning, the Sac High football team was introduced to "Fight Gone Bad". The weather cooperated and we were able to set up outside. It turned out to be one of the best workouts we've run in a long time, maybe ever. Though every athlete struggled to finish, every single one did. The effort was outstanding.
On February 21, Sacramento High graduate Donovan Ford rewrote the Pacific Weightlifting Association (PWA) record book at the PWA Championships, held at his alma mater.

Ford ended the evening with a 134-kg snatch, 175-kg clean and jerk, and a 309-kg total, all of which were new PWA Men’s Junior records. The former records had been set by Donovan Ford in January, so this young weightlifter is on a roll.
Below are a few pictures of our great facility in action. We have 14 Olympic lift platforms and are working to expand quarterly with Crossfit specific equipment to accommodate up to 100 athletes per day. Our strength and power training is based on the Olympic lifts (Clean & Jerk and Snatch) and their supplemental movements. We put heavy emphasis on Front and Back Squats, Dead Lifts, and Overhead Presses to build the base strength of every athlete. We are open 6 days a week.
Our metabolic workouts emphasize the Crossfit "Girls", with each workout accommodating 20-30 athletes.
